UK Vocational Qualifications

Key Skills

Key Skills have been developed to provide students with general vocational skills that may not be covered within the syllabus of specific qualifications. It is designed to better train young people for the workplace.

There are six main types of key skill:

· Communication
· Application of Number
· IT
· Working with Others
· Improving own Learning and Performance
· Problem Solving

The first three of these may be certificated as free-standing qualifications or can be integrated into a full Key Skills qualification. The full qualification certificate states the level attained in each key skill from 1 to 4, in line with the National Qualifications Framework.

Similar qualifications known as Basic Skills are also available at NQF Entry level, level 1 and level 2.
